MEEEE...as my mom said it...

Hello everyone! This is courtesy of my Mom...pure, unedited and unadulterated...hehehe...this is me! (according to my Mom!)

I asked my Mom for my Literacy History (for my MA paper) and this is how she answered my queries about childhood...see for yourself how feisty and fiery I am...

You were very talkative, in fact, learned to speak two syllable words before first birthday; first words were papa & mama & mik for milk. You were very articulate, always finds a way to express your feelings whether of joy, pain, anger or most often hunger. You were never intimidated by bigger kids, fighting your manoy’s brawls; and always try to reason away or argue to skip scolding or punishment.

I never read you stories from books instead told short stories, fairy tales I still remember from school days and brief accounts of my real-life childhood antics during bedtime which both you and manoy thoroughly enjoyed aside from sharing a laughter or two.

Of course I sing to you nursery rhymes and talk to you while you were still growing inside my womb how you’re going to grow up healthy and bright, most often implore you to minimize your kicking for sometimes I felt a whole team was playing basketball inside me.

You didn’t find any difficulty wring your name because you’ve had a lot of practice writing on walls and on any available surface, using your papa’s writing/drawing pens even paint brushes; Your papa bought you a magic slate where you made your first caricatures until you started copying letters on a small writing board pre-printed with alphabet & picture symbols most often copying the capital letters instead of the small ones. Naturally most toys I bought you were dolls but you preferred your manoy’s boy’s playthings even boxing gloves. In your nursery class you impressed everyone because you already know how to write your full name with middle.initial. E. Never mind that letters were irregular in size and far apart oftentimes two lines but never misspelled!

But your favorite playtime was playing teacher to make believe students oftentimes our laundry woman, your auntie dayay or aunt eliza together with pets dog & cat forced to sit still but never succeeded. During this classroom session you’re wearing my high heeled office shoes complete with blazer & handbag with a pointing stick in hand pretending to read aloud the symbols for each letter of the alphabet you pointed to. Forgetting the English words for some objects you pronounce the object’s name in the dialect kay di ka pa man maaram mag identify han letters much less read them.

First drawings were facial images, drawings of animals and five figures holding hands, said it was us, your papa and I, your manoy, randel and you. First card was in your nursery class where you pasted four red colored paper hearts in diff. sizes: two bigger hearts have names in the center Papa & Mama. At the bottom were I Love You but the two smaller hearts have no names. When Mrs. PeƱaranda asked why, you requested that she teach you how to write Manoy and Randel on top of the hearts. Coz you don’t know how to spell yet.

The summer after your nursery stint, was when you papa experimented on taking still pictures thus your first real pictures were taken during your dance recital when you took summer dance workshop in Hawaiian & Polynesian dances.

You were a consistent honor pupil, you will remember that in your grade four, your papa challenged your teacher to have an exam retake of all honor pupils because he was discontented with your third place status, thus you were elevated to 2nd honors.

Anak dire na ak nanunumdom hit iba. Maaram ka na o manunumdom ka pa han imo LIT elementary days and LNHS high school days. It waray ko la kalimti an IMO KASARAGWAKON hasta na la yana.

Thanks Mom! I'm everything I am...because you love me...
